Pros: Sorry, no pros here.
Cons: Terrible food.

This is a letter that I wrote to the head office.

Re: Oct 31 2010 visit to Casey’s Bar and Grill

Location:

1880 Ogilvie Rd Ottawa, ON (613) 742-1818

I am writing this letter because of my recent visit to a franchise location in Ottawa. As both an investor in Prime Restaurants and a person who loves to visit restaurants I was very insulted by this particular visit. I will start my letter with a few general comments prior to getting on to the specifics of why this visit was insulting.

Firstly, the service at this location was very poor. At every stage of service, our party of four, was met with very slow service. From start to end our meal, without appetizers, had us stay for 2.5 hours from start to finish. It is important to note that when we arrived, the restaurant was nearly empty. During our stay there were about 10 tables in our immediate proximity that were seated, served, paid, and left. In addition the kitchen/server got one order wrong; the chicken was left out of a pasta dish.

The aforementioned service issues, while unacceptable, are not nearly as horrible was what I am about to tell you. I ordered a simple menu item; a bacon cheese burger. I upgraded my side to sweet potato fries which by the way should be served with the dipping sauce as advertised in the sides menu. Instead I was told that they do not come with dipping sauce. When I took my first bite of the burger there was a distinct crunch followed by a nasty burnt flavour. I though to myself that it was just burnt around the edge and I would not complain. However, 2 bites later with further crunch and burnt meat I was unable to stomach this any more. I called the waitress over and sent the burger back to the kitchen. I do not understand how a chef can justify sending out any burnt food to a patron. This in itself is not acceptable.

Sending food back to a kitchen is not something I like to do and I have only ever done it one other time at a different restaurant.

The next event was the single most insulting thing that has ever happened to me at a restaurant. Because of this event I will almost certainly never visit another Casey’s location again. After sending my burger back to the kitchen, the kitchen sent the waitress back to the table with the burger that I refused to eat to explain to me that the burger is only burnt on one side and that it was very much okay to eat. I could not believe this level of disrespect. Firstly, I sent the food back because I was not willing to eat it because it was burnt and tasted horrible. Secondly, how many kitchen staff picked through the burger to decide that it would be sent back? I had no idea that there was an acceptable level of charring. When I buy food at any establishment I expect the food to be prepared well. There is absolutely no excuse for burnt food, and there is absolutely no justification for serving burnt food and then trying to reason the blunder by claiming that it’s only burnt on one side. If a chef can not tell when food is burnt, or feels that serving burnt food is justified, then he/she should not have a job in a kitchen.

The burger was finally replaced with a new one and I was not charged for the meal. This was a very small gesture considering the events that had just transpired. Though not burnt, the new burger was still not anything to write home about. It was very dry and bland and if I do happen to ever step through another Casey’s door I will not be ordering a burger. In all honestly I feel that I would have been better served, with better food, at the nearest fast food joint. It would have been 1/3 of the price and would have actually tasted good.

In conclusion I hope that you take this and all complaints seriously. I hope that this particular franchise receives a copy of this complaint and some sort of disciplinary action is served to the staff. As a patron I will most likely never visit another Casey’s. As a share holder I may very well decide to sell my shares. Bad food and bad service is bad business.
