Pros: None really.
Cons: No cons.

We attended Bigg’s one evening for supper and having never been there before we had no idea what to expect. On entering you immediately notice the booths; this place has lots of them. The booth’s gives it a diner feel. Out front there is a large patio for the summer days when you would like to dine under the sun. I will stay indoors; the sun and I don’t get along very well.

The waitress was quick to drop off our menus and take out orders. We had onion rings to start and then I had the Bigg’s pizza. The onion rings where ok but they where almost certainly thrown to the fryer from the freezer. The pizza was well, just a pizza. I have had way better. There was a complete pack of flavour on this pizza and it was loaded with tons of cheese. In act, the cheese was about all I could taste.

The waitress was good and checked in occasionally to see if we needed anything. The food was fast to be served and our checks arrived quickly when we were done.

Over all I would have to say Bigg’s is really just Bigg on Average…

Pros: There really are no pros to this one, well, the ice cream was good...
Cons: The food... oh god the food....

Being new to Ottawa, I have no clue where to find good Chinese food. After eating at Ruby King, I still have no idea.

When we pulled into the parking lot there was a lot of cars there. In Moncton, a restaurant with lots of cars means one thing… this place is going to be good. Well, not here.

On entering, you immediately see in front of you a very clean looking buffet. The room has lots of space for patrons to get around each other. The atmosphere is not very welcoming because the room is very bright and very black and white. Perhaps they want to blind you with glare. Off to the sides you will be seated in one of 4 or more sections that they have. Each has minimal decor with rows of tables along the walls. The chairs themselves are particularly uncomfortable. Perhaps they want you to be uncomfortable so that you do not stay and eat too much. But then again, the food does that job very well.

Being a buffet I always feel the need to sample everything. My first stop was the hot and sour soup. I have never had hot and sour soup before and it this is any indication of what it is supposed to be I will never have it again. After one spoon full I though hmm, its OK. After 3-4 spoonfuls I was thinking, ok that’s enough…

I always judge egg rolls as a big part of what makes a good Chinese restaurant. If I were to use that as the determining factor here, they would rank a very large negative score. The egg roll where disgusting and that’s a generous statement. Moving on to the rest of the buffet every dish has signature hotness to it…I am thinking black pepper and lots of it. There were a few items in the buffet that were alright like the salt and pepper pork chops and one type of chicken but I forget the name. Do not try the wings there were dry and tasteless. Every veggie and noodle dish looked unique but had the same basic flavour. I could go on for days expressing how disappointed I was with this place but you get the picture by now.

To make matters worse I am almost certain that the food was laced with MSG. In Moncton I found the places that did not use MSG and I ate at those places exclusively. I never thought to ask about MSG here but I will have to start asking so that I can avoid it. MSG is a chemical additive that is 100% not needed and why restaurants are allowed to use it is beyond me considering that the majority of the population has negative reactions to it thought most are minor some can be severe.

To sum this review up I will just say that I will not be returning to Ruby King.

Pros: I have to say the food, they have a great breakfast menu with some unique choices.
Cons: There was nothing bad here.

Perkins is a family restaurant located across from the St Laurent Mall. They also run a bakery in the same kitchen and the baked goods look fantastic but I have yet to try those.

On entering Perkins you are drawn in by the warm cozy atmosphere. There are tables on the floor and around the sides are booths for those who prefer a booth. There is a hostess waiting at the entrance to greet and seat patrons as they come in. Once you are seated a waitress takes over. The service here is fast. From entering to leaving they do not miss a step and are always pleasant.

For my breakfast on this occasion I ordered a limited time special; Bavarian Strata Sandwich. (Note: take advantage of their special because they are always fantastic and you may not get a second chance). This sandwich was basically a steak and egg sandwich on a pastry covered in hollandaise sauce. It was great! There were also sides on the plate including delicious hash browns.

Price wise, this makes an expensive breakfast but considering what you are getting I feel it’s a great deal. For 2 of us to eat breakfast the bill was close to $30. Sure, you could get 3.99 bacon and eggs anywhere, and I believe you can get it here as well but if you are in the mood for something different try one of their special breakfasts and you will not be disappointed.

Overall, Perkins is a must visit.
