Pros: Sorry, no pros here.
Cons: Terrible food.

This is a letter that I wrote to the head office.

Re: Oct 31 2010 visit to Casey’s Bar and Grill

Location:

1880 Ogilvie Rd Ottawa, ON (613) 742-1818

I am writing this letter because of my recent visit to a franchise location in Ottawa. As both an investor in Prime Restaurants and a person who loves to visit restaurants I was very insulted by this particular visit. I will start my letter with a few general comments prior to getting on to the specifics of why this visit was insulting.

Firstly, the service at this location was very poor. At every stage of service, our party of four, was met with very slow service. From start to end our meal, without appetizers, had us stay for 2.5 hours from start to finish. It is important to note that when we arrived, the restaurant was nearly empty. During our stay there were about 10 tables in our immediate proximity that were seated, served, paid, and left. In addition the kitchen/server got one order wrong; the chicken was left out of a pasta dish.

The aforementioned service issues, while unacceptable, are not nearly as horrible was what I am about to tell you. I ordered a simple menu item; a bacon cheese burger. I upgraded my side to sweet potato fries which by the way should be served with the dipping sauce as advertised in the sides menu. Instead I was told that they do not come with dipping sauce. When I took my first bite of the burger there was a distinct crunch followed by a nasty burnt flavour. I though to myself that it was just burnt around the edge and I would not complain. However, 2 bites later with further crunch and burnt meat I was unable to stomach this any more. I called the waitress over and sent the burger back to the kitchen. I do not understand how a chef can justify sending out any burnt food to a patron. This in itself is not acceptable.

Sending food back to a kitchen is not something I like to do and I have only ever done it one other time at a different restaurant.

The next event was the single most insulting thing that has ever happened to me at a restaurant. Because of this event I will almost certainly never visit another Casey’s location again. After sending my burger back to the kitchen, the kitchen sent the waitress back to the table with the burger that I refused to eat to explain to me that the burger is only burnt on one side and that it was very much okay to eat. I could not believe this level of disrespect. Firstly, I sent the food back because I was not willing to eat it because it was burnt and tasted horrible. Secondly, how many kitchen staff picked through the burger to decide that it would be sent back? I had no idea that there was an acceptable level of charring. When I buy food at any establishment I expect the food to be prepared well. There is absolutely no excuse for burnt food, and there is absolutely no justification for serving burnt food and then trying to reason the blunder by claiming that it’s only burnt on one side. If a chef can not tell when food is burnt, or feels that serving burnt food is justified, then he/she should not have a job in a kitchen.

The burger was finally replaced with a new one and I was not charged for the meal. This was a very small gesture considering the events that had just transpired. Though not burnt, the new burger was still not anything to write home about. It was very dry and bland and if I do happen to ever step through another Casey’s door I will not be ordering a burger. In all honestly I feel that I would have been better served, with better food, at the nearest fast food joint. It would have been 1/3 of the price and would have actually tasted good.

In conclusion I hope that you take this and all complaints seriously. I hope that this particular franchise receives a copy of this complaint and some sort of disciplinary action is served to the staff. As a patron I will most likely never visit another Casey’s. As a share holder I may very well decide to sell my shares. Bad food and bad service is bad business.

Pros: Fantastic food, Try the onion rings!!!
Cons: Hidden location, seems a bit run down or sketchy.

Last Friday my wife and I ventured out to find a restaurant... someplace new. We ended up in the parking lot of a strip mall on Tenth Line Rd. In this strip mall was a steakhouse, The Mix. It is tucked away in the back, hidden behind a Dairy Queen. It does not seem to be an ideal location as it is very much hidden from sight in all directions. The Mix Steakhouse and Bar might be more appropriately names Jekyll and Hyde’s Steakhouse and Grill. Bear with me and I will explain.

Being a steakhouse I was expecting a much more upscale atmosphere in the restaurant. However, on entering I realized that this was nothing more than a tiny little pub with a few booths and a few tables in the back. It was very small and along the side was the bar. This place seemed dingy and a bit dirty. It was far from warm and welcoming. My wife and I were actually about to leave when the waiter caught us and gave us the menu’s. We were already there so why not take a look right?

Oddly enough the menu was that if an upscale steakhouse. They served $15-$20 pasta’s, seafood ranging from $13-$30 and steaks ranging from $22-$36. They even had rack of lamb on the menu. This was definitely no pub menu. That being said if you wanted pub food they did have wings and burgers etc. The special that night was the Fajita’s two for one special. We took the Fajita’s, I added onion rings to start and my wife added soup to start.

The onion rings were perhaps one of the top 3 I have ever had. What made them stand out was the garlic dipping sauce that came with them. It was thick, creamy, and loaded with garlic flavour and went amazingly well with the rings. Then came the Fajita’s. There was a large deep dish of sour cream, Guacamole, and brochette (not the correct name). There was also a dish of rice with a spicy tomato paste on the top. The fajita filling came sizzling hot on a cast iron dish. There was loads of peppers chicken and onions. Not like those places that we have all been to where you get a few peppers and a dish loaded with onions. These guys made a nice well proportioned dish. There was actually a perfect number of shells served as well. Perhaps 1 or 2 more would have been better but there was enough. The fajita’s where very juicy, extremely tasty, enjoyable. I was still astounded by the food offered by this place that looked like a dive and to think i was ready to walk out the door and not even try it! One thing that should have been a giveaway that food would be good was that there were no ketchup bottles on the table. Typically that’s a good thing; it means they know you are not going to want to drown your food in ketchup to make it edible. I have neglected the service to this point but I will assure the service is great. I mean, how could it not be great, the joint was nearly empty. I suspect that may have to do with it being effectively hidden from any main road in the local area. It is truly a hidden gem. The service was fast, kind, and courteous.

As for the value, I will say that even at regular price these fajita’s would have been worth the $16 each. As a 2 for one the value was absolutely outstanding. The onion rings and soup were also very reasonably priced. I do want to go back and try the fish and chips and a steak. The steak will be the ultimate tell tale for value at this restaurant. They call it a steakhouse, let’s see if they get it right!

In summary, I am very pleased with this find. It is a diamond in the rough. I hope you figured out from my review that it should have been named Jekyll and Hyde’s because of the discrepancy between the menu and the atmosphere.

By all means, give this place a try. Do not be turned off by the first impression. You will be pleasantly surprised.

This is the best Pizza I have had in Orleans. The sauce they use give thier pizza a very uniqu flavour. I love it but it may not be everyones choice. The service is great, and the value is excellent.

Pros: Good foods
Cons: none

Because this is a take out I will keep it brief. The service is average, exactly whet you would expect from a take out. The timing of the order was off by about 10 minutes so I had a bit of a wait. I do not like having to wait to take out. If I am told 15 minutes I expect it to be ready in 15 minutes. Beyond that the food it self was very good. Not the best I have had but definity on the list of places to return to. Give them a try and see what you think.

Average sums it up. The pizza is average, the service is average. Actually, the service could have been better. I ended up waiting about 15 minuts for my pizza that sould have been done when I arrived. Thats a trend I notice in Orleans...
