Pros: Evertying about this place was great.
Cons: No cons on this visit

This is a small Chinese restaurant located on Mountain Rd. The specialize in Szechwan style food. It is easily over looked by people passing though because of the shear volume of restaurants on Mountain Rd.

This place provides a dimly lit, cozy, relaxed and intimate atmosphere. Its a pleasure to dine at Hose of Lam. They can be very busy at times, particularly for their noon hour buffet. The buffet is the smallest I have seen but rest assured, what they lack in size they make up for in excellence of quality.

The service here is excellent. you are always seated quickly and the waitress attends to your need throughout your stay.

The order are taken and prepared promptly Though I enjoy the buffet I am writing this review on a Szechwan chicken dish that I ordered late one evening. I believe it was hot orange chicken, the exact name escapes me. This dish was amazing. Everything on the plate tasted great. Even the rice has its own unique flavour which makes it stand out from rice served at other Chinese restaurants. The chicken was lightly battered and smothered in the orange sauce. Thought it was hot orange chicken the spices where not over used. There was some heat but not enough to make your eyes water and cause uncontrollable sweats. No one wants that experience when they go out for supper.

The price range on their menu varies greatly depending on what you order. As with most Chinese Restaurants they provide some "combination" plates, all of which are excellent. They are around the $10 range. The more traditional Chinese/Szechwan dishes range from approximately $12- $20 and are well worth the price.

Tip: I am not certain but I am very confident that this restaurant DOES NOT USE MSG. There are some Chinese places that I now avoid due to the heavy use of MSG. For my self and many people MSG can cause some un desired after effect. The most mild being an unquenchable thirst.

Pros: Value and speed of service definitly stand out.
Cons: No cons today.

This is one of my favourite breakfast places in Moncton. You can sum this review up very quickly; Great Service, Great Food! This is family run diner that has been open since the 1930's and is now run by the third generation of Hyne's. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that they are doing something right! On a typical Sunday morning you can expect to be waiting at the door for a seat in this particular diner. Its a favourite among many Monctonians. Even when there is a line up it typically moves very fast. When this place is packed, it is not overly loud as many places tend to be.

However, on this particular visit there was no line up and we were seated immediately. Tea and coffee was promptly brought to the table and the orders taken immediately. In no time at all the orders where on the table.

I ordered the special on this occasion. As per usual they returned quickly with the order and everything was just as ordered. If you want a little extra with your breakfast, order a side of potato pancakes, they are fantastic.

I definitely recommend this place for breakfast to everyone who visits Moncton. S.R.

Cons: Food, service, value, atmosphere.... it was all bad.

Ahhh Cora's. Everyone love Cora's... right?

Well, it was a Sunday morning when some friends, J.W. and I decided it was time to hit Cora's for breakfast. There is only one location in Moncton and its right on Main St. I was with the first group to arrive. We just barely had time to get inside the inner door. Expecting a party of seven we were told that the wait would be really long. I was happy to wait because there was free fudge in front of me. They also served up some free smoothie samples. As you will soon read, the generosity stops with the seating! After our friends arrived we decided to stick it out and wait for a table. Much to our surprise we got seated fairly promptly (15 minutes).

Cora's offers up one of the largest breakfast menus in Moncton, if not the largest. After browsing I decided I was up for the Brie and Mushroom Benedict with the daily smoothie. The smoothies came to the table quickly. Mine was great but many other at the table had problems with the garbage.... no no... garnish fit for the garbage, yeah that's better. It was disappointing to see that some of these were server with spoiling fruit. Check out J.W.'s review because he got the rotten strawberry. Unacceptable; Strike one!

Just prior to the meals arriving the waitress comes flying by our table and drops off a plate of maple syrup. She blurted something out as she passed and other told me that she said the syrup was 50 cents a tub. We all thought this was ridiculous for a variety of reasons. Why not just put a jar of it on the table with the other syrup and let people pick what ever they want.

On to the breakfast, after about 25 minutes our whole table was served. My eyes drew immediately to my browned apple slices, mmm, appetizing. Following to the right, a soft strawberry that would do lucky to survive another day in the refrigerator. A glance at the remaining fruit revealed that nothing would be fresh today. I ate the fruit that was edible and then cut into my eggs benedict. Now, I always order my eggs with a runny yolk but these eggs were well done. I thought that the kitchen simply over cooked my eggs until the person across from who also ordered the same meal said "ewe, my yolks are runny". So, they served each of us the wrong plate. By the way, that was strike 3. Lets move on. The potatoes (hash browns/home fries) were very disappointing. I ordered them with mushrooms and onions and they still had a lack of personality. It was like biting into boiled potatoes. There was no spice, not even salt or pepper. I think I can sum the food up with "sub-standard".

When the bill arrived I immediately noticed the price. For 2 people the bill was close to $40. This was breakfast folks, and not a good one!!! Those shrooms and onions cost a $1.50 each to be tossed in with the taters. The sausage also cost extra, but I expected that. Its odd how we were told that the maple syrup would cost 50 cents a pop but there was no mention about mushrooms and onions costing extra when we were asked if we wanted those.

Cora's flew into Moncton with great food and good service and it appears that they have had a crash landing. Judging by the line up to get in I assume they are still riding their first impression but its only a matter of time before Monctonians realize that the quality is just not there.

For this feast of low quality and over priced food with a touch of mediocre service Cora's scores 1/5. If I was not bribed at the door with free fudge they may not have gotten that one point. MMM, fudge.....

Pros: Speed of service and quality of the fish and chips.
Cons: The portions should be better for the price.

I visited at 12:00, I was thinking that it was going to be nightmare trying to get my order in. Much to my surprise the line of about 20 people moved VERY FAST! I placed my order and paid after having been inside the door for 3 minutes! For fast food that earns them some bonus points. These guys were clearly anticipating a noon hour rush because all of the baskets were full and ready to drop into the fryer at any instant. Now, for the taste test! I started with a few fries. I was impressed. They were great and had a bit of homemade flare. Moving on to the fish now. I had the 3 pieces for about $9. For the price it’s a pretty average portion here in Moncton. It would not fly in PEI or NS. I took the first bite was pleasantly surprised. The fish was pretty good; nice flavour, thin crispy batter, moist tender fish. I was very much enjoying this meal. My only strong suspicion is that this fish was not haddock. I like haddock and this was not the characteristic flavour that I have come to enjoy. I have to chip away some marks for that. Regardless this was really good fish and chips. Worthy of a place in Moncton's top 10 fish and chips page right here at MonctonFoodCritic.com. I give deluxe 4.5/5. They scored a bonus .25 for the fast service. I was very impressed.

Pros: The apple butter barbeque ribs!!
Cons: More often than not you will be stuck in a line waiting for a table.

I have eaten here on many occasions with groups of friends and co-workers ranging from 2-15 people. I have tried over half of their menu. To date, I have not been disappointed with the food quality. If you are visiting with a large group of people everyone will find something on the menu that they will be please with.

The quality of food is consistently above average and their portions always leave you feeling like you ate just a bit too much.

Montana's has a nice rustic looks and a country feel. For the most part this is a relaxed environment that is not over crowed with too many tables in too little space. On a busy night however it can be a very loud and obnoxious environment.

If you go during peak hours you can expect a 20+ minute wait for your table. However, the wait is worth it. When you get your table the service is always fast and efficient.

The price's on the menu vary greatly, mainly because of the vast variety of choices. The meals range from approximately $8 (Burgers etc.) to over $20 (Steak/ribs etc.)

Tip: Thy the spinach dip for an appetizer Tip: Try the apple butter barbecue rib tips! S.R.
